Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) Her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see the actress pursue acting until she turned 18. Perry acknowledged that she was not confident in her acting during high school. However, she began acting to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move back to California to return, where she started working on stage. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her for the play The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. Also, she was cast on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The character was assigned by audition regardless of the fact that she is a relative to the character.
